In the spotlight – Kelly Midgley of Sottero & Midgley by Maggie Sottero Designs

CG Boutique handpicks its designer partners with you in mind that’s why we are so excited to share this recent interview with Kelly Midgley of the amazing Sottero & Midgley by Maggie Sottero family legacy. We asked her a number of questions about their brand, their gorgeous bridal gown creations and a few bits about them all, so you get to know why we have handpicked them to work with us….

CG Boutique asks:

What made you choose to go into wedding dress designing?

Kelly replies:

Wedding dress designing runs in my blood! My grandmother, Dorothy (I called her Dinny, and many others called her Dot) and mother, Lesley, started this business over twenty years ago, as there wasn’t something on the market that created that perfect fit for brides. So, Maggie Sottero was born, and our two-piece bridal set, which guaranteed a perfect fit for any bride of any size or shape, established us as a significant name in the bridal industry. At Maggie, we continue to innovate and design for today’s bride.

My family’s journey in this industry has gotten me to where I am today. I know Dorothy is looking down and inspiring and helping me each day. I have so many fond memories of when my family first started their bridal business. Our first retail store in downtown Sydney, Australia was the tiniest store, although it seemed huge as a 3-year-old. I would hide in the racks of clothes and scare customers and climb the narrowest spiral staircase to the loft to do my little kid crafty things. My parents, Wayne and Lesley, and my grandmother Dorothy, along with many staff (family) members have built a world-class bridal business. They are truly wonderful examples that have taught me more than they know. I’m honoured and excited to carry on the Maggie family legacy.

CG Boutique asks:

What would you say sets your wedding dress designs apart from others?

Kelly replies:

I would say it is eagerness to excel in multiple areas: the care that we put into the product and provide our customers, the passion to share the heritage of our company and our willingness to adapt to emerging technology and new marketing practices. Besides that we have a devoted growth mentality and an everlasting ambition. Due to our expansive and well-merchandised portfolio of brands, we are able to learn and respond to feedback and trends quicker than our competition can. Furthermore, owning and operating our own distribution centres that service 70 countries and 1,500 boutiques allows us to provide outstanding service to our wholesale partners and brides globally. We offer customization of our gowns, and quick service options for brides who seek to purchase ready to wear or do not have the luxury of waiting the standard bridal delivery lead time.

CG Boutique asks:

What do you love most about what you do?

Kelly replies:

Marriage is a special moment in the lives of two individuals and families, What I love most about what I do is being able to expand the Maggie family with each bride who says “Yes!” to one of our designs. We’re continuously inspired by the amazing, beautiful love stories from our diverse Midgley Brides. We are committed to making brides’ dreams a reality!

CG Boutique asks:

What are the latest trends that you are seeing?

Kelly replies:

We’re predicting trends like intricate lace, decadent long-sleeves, bows, tassels and fringe, 3-D florals, statement trains and backs, sparkly details, and pearls will be popular! You can find these trends and more in our latest collection. These gowns are fresh, modern, and on-trend, while also having enduring value and style.

CG Boutique asks:

How are you impacted by the COVID crisis?

Kelly replies:

As much as it has been tough, Maggie has been evaluating how we can use this time to lead forward. Now more than ever, we want to celebrate love, and love for ALL. Through this time, we’ve noticed the trend of minimonies, so we’ve created designs that are perfect for these small, intimate occasions. We’ve also been inspired to bring more of the treasured personal element into our product offering, which is why we have launched Personalize It! For Your Love Story, which allows brides to personalize elements of their gown like sleeves, layers in the skirt, and trains.

No matter what a bride’s shape, size, style, or budget, we are committed to making sure she feels like her best self on her special day. This is the guiding pillar we’ve used throughout this time. Our resilient Maggie Sottero Designs community has ignited our hope and excitement for the future. We are thrilled to explore this new era of the bridal industry even more. The prospect of tomorrow is met with joy, creativity, innovation, and even more Maggie Magic!

CG Boutique asks:

What advice would you give to brides to be when looking for their wedding gowns?

Kelly replies:

Our advice: your heart will tell you when it is the one. When you see your own glamour and personality in a dress, you’ve found the one! Your wedding day is a day devoted to you and your love and there is no way to better celebrate that than with a style that is reflective of you!

Also, we advise to not miss out on accessories! Accessories can completely transform a look and elevate a style to pure, unabashed glamour. Our accessories like detachable sleeves, overskirts, veils, and detachable or extended trains can make a look completely unique. Even better, you can achieve a 2-in-1 look for your big day. Have dramatic puff sleeves for the ceremony, then remove for the reception and dance the night away! How fabulous!

CG Boutique asks:

Describe a day in the life of me as a designer?

Kelly replies:

Each day looks a little different, but it usually consists of a combination of researching emerging trends, making refinements on our samples with our design team, reviewing sketches, conducting fittings, developing the creative direction of our brands, connecting with our local boutiques to gather feedback from brides, and attending meetings on launching our latest collections. While some days are packed to the brim, I wouldn’t change a thing!
